1. Eliminate disparities in mental health service delivery to minorities
2. Promote positive mental health in the minority community
3. Disseminate accurate and appropriate information on minority mental health
4. Advocate and conduct research on mental health issues negatively impacting
the minority community
5. Monitor and give input on mental health legislation affecting minorities
6. Address managed care issues affecting minority mental health.
To address several of the goals, a national conference grant was prepared by
Shelvy Haywood Keglar, Ph.D., Joseph Smedley, Ph.D., and William Lawson,
M.D. for submission to Samsha in 2000. Due to the departure of Dr. Lawson to
Howard University, the grant was not submitted because of the loss of the major
sponsor, Indiana University Medical Center. Efforts continued toward a
conference on mental health and a major sponsorship was received from the
Marion County Health Department for a one day statewide conference that was
held on April 5th, 2002.
